The Royal Wedding

I was interviewed by Gulf News website yesterday on whether I think Charles & Camilla or Wills & Kate should take over once Queen Elizabeth relinquishes her throne. I'm not 100% comfortable in front of the camera lens - photographic or video - so it'll be 'interesting' to view the results. I'll let you know when it goes live (or maybe not if it's really dire!).

It's been all about the Royal Wedding for me since December so I'm really looking forward to the actual event after such a long build-up. I've been working part-time for Dubai Reunited, a company which aims to get expats with a link to Dubai together in Dubai and overseas; our first event is the Royal Wedding Garden Party on Friday 29th December at the Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club.

We'll be watching Wills and Kate get hitched live on the big screen while tucking into quintessentially British grub and lots of Pimms, before kicking back to watch the Royal Wedding Polo Cup for the rest of the afternoon (apparently Polo is also known as 'the sport of kings' - very apt for a right royal occasion such as this).

Yes, this is a shameless plug but nevertheless.... Table bookings are sold out for the Garden Party event but you can still get your hands on tickets for the post-wedding evening bash if you hurry (bookings via email to sarah@urbanevents.ae). AED50 for a night of dancing to the best British music from the past 50 years? Me likey.

I was counting them up the other day and this Queen has allowed her name to be used for at least a dozen wars during her reign - all but one or two were wars of aggression or colonialism! Royal Wedding, the Royal Succession? Tell that to the camera!

Can't think of many countries who can't boast the same history - and excuse me if I'm splitting hairs here but isn't war an act of aggression by definition?

And as for colonising other counties, yup, most of the world has been at it at one point or another. Not that I'm standing up for Queen Liz, especially, but I really don't think the UK is much more guilty than the majority of the world's leading powers.

Heated debate? Bring it on.

Poor Queen Elizabeth! What a life! She's damned if she does and damned if she doesn't! I even hear she has had to have the grandson's prospective pushy in-laws in for lunch. All she really wants is to be left alone with the Corgies. Give her a break Sychophants and Hostiles. She's an OAP.

The Queen can't say NO to war - nor would she. These days, her role is purely ceremonial. The British Crown is on shifting sands - rather like Dubai. She is rather ruled by the opinions of that Great British Institution - the press. One false move and the lot of them will be in exile in UAE.

The Grim Reaper

Firstborn is obsessed with death. It started with the odd comment, such as; "Mummy, what happens when you die?" OK, I thought, I was expecting this at some point, what a cute little curious brain she has. So I trotted out all the cosy Heaven stuff and left out all the things that could worry her, such as worms and bones and holes in the ground. This went down pretty well, although somehow Firstborn made the jump from my view of Heaven (filled with love, joy, always warm, never rains, has a huge discount designer shoe outlet and I never have to pay my Visa bill) to her own view of Heaven; a wonderous place where small girls don't have to eat their vegetables before they're allowed pudding, and where Barbie dolls grow on trees. Anyway, I digress. Last week Firstborn started shouting "Kill! Kill!" in a bloodthirsty tone while bashing her hithero-beloved teddy against the wall. This was topped by her purposely flushing her favourite My Little Pony down the loo. ...

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to

A friend recently emailed me to say that her big memory of her stay with us last year is that she had a great birthday, one of the few where she didn't 'act like a spoiled grumpy princess'. She tried to give me all the credit but as I explained to her, it was all down to having a fellow female organising the birthday fun rather than leaving it to her partner. Her email got me thinking about birthdays and how very different men and women are in their attitudes to celebrating special occasions. It also had me thinking about my birthday two years ago when I threw a major tantrum in the Carrefour car-park after being told that we were off to do the weekly shop, kids in tow, which was simply the final straw at the end of a very uninspiring day. In contrast, my birthday last year was rather lovely (a morning on my own in a spa with no mobile coverage, pure selfish bliss). This year - in a few short months, eek! - I'll be hitting the grand old age of 38. This will be my las...
